Droppings of wisdom

Gee-golly-gosh-whiz, this is a lucky find. Consider it completely and whole-stomachly recommended! And while I’m sharing my pearls, consider Canal Walk Christmas Shopping completely un-recommended and an absolute abomination. After an evening like we had last night, I can truly say that I hate Christmas. Certainly nothing like a little cash-strapped panic to bring out the worst in people either…

We couldn’t help wondering “What Would Jesus Do?” about this utter loss-of-plot commercialism, and the shortest verse in the bible just seemed all too appropriate.

Twas the week before the week before Christmas…

… and all through the house, not a creature was chilling, not even a mouse.

Yeah. It’s a bit chaotic, and would-you-believe-it, not much of it has to do with Christmas mice either. It’s been a very social week though, and as well as having our end-of-year Cell group dinner at Brass Bell (which is again my new-old-favourite-place), I’d already been there for supper on Tuesday with the brothers, an old school friend, an imminently-married band-friend and his friends who included some other school friends…

This weekend also carried some excitement, when out of the blue (and during my blues…) my neighbour’s gardener arrived at the gate. After his insisting that I’d booked him, and my insisting that I hadn’t, I resolved not to look a gift…er…gardener in the mouth, and welcomed him to toil for the day. Not to waste him, I darted off to the nursery and bought all number of things for him to plant (600 buffalo plugs included!), got the mower etc. Net result is a resuscitated garden which now shows more promising signs of life! The evening was spent with friends watching LOST 2, now that it’s finally been found. Forgotten how much I enjoyed it.

Twas the week before the week before Christmas…Twas the week before the week before Christmas…Twas the week before the week before Christmas…Twas the week before the week before Christmas…

Yesterday saw another reunion with friends-from-afar, and we had a good gas (and meal!) at Pete’s place, hanging with all the guys from Union, and most of the guys from Virgin Apple Skins (don’t ask…).

Twas the week before the week before Christmas…Twas the week before the week before Christmas…Twas the week before the week before Christmas…Twas the week before the week before Christmas…

The (late) evening was spent completing my back-burner R/C plane-building project (the delta-wing dazi, made from corex), and I eagerly await a chance to try it out. Just need a prop and a battery-charge, and I should be set.

Tonight, Jan and I are off on a date-night, courtesy of (baby-sitting) friends, and tomorrow night will be the start, and hopefully end, of our flit with the mania that is Christmas Shopping. Read this for a cry…

Jacobsbaai, round two of two

In what has become somewhat of an annual tradition, my mom-in-law treated the families to a weekend away to celebrate her birthday. Where we’d usually have gone up to Betty’s Bay, we ventured to the West Coast, to the same place we’d visited a few months ago.

Unfortunately marred by what can only have been described as the WORST hospitality imaginable (after which I am advising people NOT to visit Swartriet), the weekend certainly took on a different flavour to last time, but the scenery, nature and wildness of the West Coast were still fantastic. Oh. Except the wind blew. Relentlessly. Unceasingly. Maniacally.

Highlights included a few great walks, including Jamie’s first experience of sand-between-the-toes. The kite made a few mad swipes of the beach, the R/C truck left kilometers of tire-tracks, and apart from that we spent a disproportionate amount of time playing Settlers.

I guess, for me, the largest highlight was the fact that (middle-brother) Adin is down, and it’s been great to finally introduce Jamie to his other uncle and to watch the chemistry as they get to know each other. He’s down for another week or two, and I look forward to a few more tots of the Scottish Whiskey…

Happy Birthday Beth – thanks for the weekend!

Eye of the tiger!

Yeup, I’m still going to put a post up here about our weekend to Jacobsbaai, but am looking for some pictures first. In the meantime, this just blew my mind. Hopefully you enjoy it too…

I got an email this morning, which sort of intrigued me, so of course I went exploring. Look at the email first, then read on.

Close-up of the Miller Brewery commission

The guy’s name is Eric Grohe, and he’s an NY artist. He’s been commissioned all over the US to convert drab, gray walls into incredible, mind-blowing pseudo-realistic murals, and his portfolio is simply amazing. Check it out, especially his projects.

The small world

Other than to mention the fact that our company year-end function was spent lazing at the breakers of False Bay, enjoying great food and drinks (and which I thought was great fun…), I received a comment on my last post from an old school friend who’d seen a link to here on a co-antenatal-class-member now-parent friend’s blog. (thanks for the link, yours is in the mail). Just reminds me how very small and interconnected the world is nowadays – everything a click away. Wow.

And if, perchance, you thought we’d been resting…

Maybe this should start off with a ‘Happy Christmas’, just in case my horrendous blogging inactivity continues beyond today, and I miss the festivities.

Predominantly, all three of us have been sick. It’s been incredibly frustrating, as it seems to have just round-robined itself around, and despite great weather and a warm pool, we’ve spent most of the last 5 weeks a bit under said weather. I need to mention the fact that my nemesis has returned – the bloody south-easter has hardly relented since the start of November, and with it comes all things evil.

Anyway, mid November saw another installment of Captain Awesome’s Mimmos Birthday extravagananza. Forty-three people shared the evening with me, and your presence was very appreciated, I had a great time, and Mimmo’s made tons of cash. Hopefully you also enjoyed it…

As a result of some generous birthday capital, I’m now building an R/C plane. By no means is the heli forgotten, but I want something complimentary to try. It’s been lots of fun to build, and of course if it actually flys it’ll be a real bonus.

Another side-effect of birthday gifts would be my sushi-fetish. I was a slow-starter with this particular cuisine, but I’d like to think I’m making up for it now. I’ve made twice now, and apart from the time, the results have been really good.

And if, perchance, you thought we’d been resting…And if, perchance, you thought we’d been resting…And if, perchance, you thought we’d been resting…And if, perchance, you thought we’d been resting…
And if, perchance, you thought we’d been resting…And if, perchance, you thought we’d been resting…And if, perchance, you thought we’d been resting…And if, perchance, you thought we’d been resting…

Um, then I’ve been accepted to a Business Academy next year – it’s a semester course, running second half, so that’s way away for now. Still chuffed though, and looking forward to some new jargon.

Jamie was also dedicated at church, something we’d been planning to do in more personal surroundings, but in case that took longer to plan and he’d graduated before we got our act together, we chose to do it at church. He wasted my stage-act by sucking the microphone and doing Darth Jamie voice-overs.

Right, then onto familial matters. NZ invaded SA as cousins and aunts arrived. We had some good chats, good Settlers and good food. Always nice to see them, although the accents are starting to become worrying. Ever heard a Pretoria-n speaking Kiwi?! It was terrific showing Jamie off to them too – he’s such a showman. Can’t think where that comes from…?

And speaking of his talents, our house has been rapidly baby-proofed, as the boy is now completely and dangerously mobile. His crawling went from amusing to potent in a matter of days, and with great speed he can navigate his way anywhere in the house. Gone are the halcyon days of leaving him sitting playing with something and sneaking out. Pitter-patter-pitter-patter and he’s right behind – usually armed with proud eyes and a dashing smile.

Further drama looms, as he’s realised his immense strength can best be used to pull himself standing on any and all objects he comes across. Door gates are his favourite, but without having publicly demonstrated his standing-to-sitting tricks, we’re usually quick to the scene to try and save his noggin from collecting bruises on the tiles.

And then of course his eating habits. Throwing caution to the wind, I gave him a Jolly Jammer last week, which he proceeded to suck into oblivion. Not without depositing a dubiously tasty layer on all surrounds, of course.

And if, perchance, you thought we’d been resting…And if, perchance, you thought we’d been resting…And if, perchance, you thought we’d been resting…And if, perchance, you thought we’d been resting…

I am really looking forward to this week though, several UK visitors arriving, most significant of all being my boet, Adin, who’s been in Scotland for a darn-long time. It’ll be his first meeting of Jamie, and like any proud father, I can’t wait for my boy to meet his Uncle. We’ll be heading off this weekend to Jacobsbaai again – same wonderful West Coast – to celebrate my mom-in-law’s birthday – can’t wait.

Damo, Rachel and co will also be down shortly, as will Anton and Tandy. In a cruel twist of fate, Trent and Caryn have had passport-disappearance-issues, and with the unhelp of our UK embassy, won’t be able to make use of their tickets home. Awful and crap.

Anyway, if you’ve actually read to the end, you can give yourselves another 15 points. Hopefully it won’t be as long before I get back into blog-mode.

Stupid, Pestering And Malicious

10 points if you spot the acronym. The website may not be a hit with any human readers, but it’s sure caught the attention of many bots and spam-servers. I spend a maddening few minutes every day veto-ing ridiculous comments, advertising everything from the (un)usual pharmeceuticals to stock options and lottery prediction software. Grrrrrrrrrr.

If comments disappear from the site, that’ll be the reason.
